Our History

Five hundred years
and counting.

A Cedar of Lebanon planted in 1520. A Georgian manor that rose in the 1700s. A family who took it on in 1990. The brief story of the place you may one day call yours.

The historic facade of Glewstone Court

Glewstone Court has watched the Wye Valley change around it for hundreds of years. Its walls hold Georgian elegance and Regency character. Its gardens hold a cedar that was already ancient when the house was young. The brief story of the place you may one day call yours.

The Cedar Takes Root

A Cedar of Lebanon is planted on what will become the south lawn. Five centuries later it still stands, the living heart of the gardens and a favourite spot for ceremonies.

The 1700s

A Georgian House Rises

The manor house is built in the restrained, graceful Georgian style of the age, sash windows, fine proportions and rooms designed to be filled with light and company.

The 1800s

Regency Character Added

Later Regency additions bring ornate cornicing, marble fireplaces and the sweeping mahogany staircase, giving the house the layered character it keeps to this day.

The 20th Century

A Cherished Country Home

Through the decades Glewstone remains a private country house, its gardens matured, its rooms lived in and loved by the families fortunate enough to call it home.

The 1990s

Doors Opened to Celebrations

Our family takes on the house and begins to share it, welcoming the first of many couples to marry beneath the cedar and celebrate within these walls.

The Architecture

Georgian Bones, Regency Soul

The house wears its history honestly. Georgian symmetry gives it calm and proportion; Regency detailing gives it warmth and flourish. Original Victorian mosaic tiling lines the entrance hall and open fires still draw in every principal room.

As a Grade II listed building, every restoration has been carried out with care, preserving the character that makes Glewstone feel quite unlike anywhere else.

The Cedar of Lebanon

Five Hundred Years of Shade

No feature of Glewstone is more loved than its great cedar. Believed to be around five centuries old, it spreads its branches over the south lawn and has become the natural stage for outdoor ceremonies.

It is the tree at the heart of our crest and the quiet witness to countless first kisses as newlyweds. To marry beneath it is to be part of a very long story indeed.
